WHAT'S YOGA?
introduction benefits of yoga beginner's guide
the basic class:

The Beginner's Hatha 1 class consists of a series of postures (asanas), breathing practices, deep relaxation and meditation, all of which have immense benefits both physically, mentally and spiritually when done regularly. In contrast to most forms of exercise, the postures are most effective when done gently, without strain, and in a positive manner.
The class follows this basic outline:
  1. warm-ups: prepare the body for the postures
    • backward bending asanas
    • forward bending asanas
    • twisting poses
    • all of which develop strength and flexibility and stimulate organs and glands
  2. inverted asanas: reverse the pull of gravity on body and bring blood to the brain
  3. standing or optional poses: develop concentration and calm nerves
  4. deep relaxation: or Yogic Sleep, tensing and releasing muscles and using visualizations
  5. breathing practices: help calm and control mind in preparation for meditation
  6. meditation: introduction to basic meditation techniques
